Christa Ehmann Powers, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Education Officer

Christa directs the development of the Smarthinking-Certified training and academic support programs as well as tutor selection and professional development activities. She also organizes the strategic planning and research agenda for Smarthinking's online pedagogy.
Christa is an experienced teacher and tutor. She has lectured in English at Prague's State Language School in the Czech Republic. She has also coordinated intensive English language seminars for executives and tutored senior news editors at TV NOVA (also in Prague) as well as tutored at The Nesbitt-Johnston Writing Center while obtaining her B.A. from Hamilton College. Christa has also worked as a research analyst at the Gallup Poll in Princeton, NJ.
Both Christa's masters and doctoral research explore one-to-one tutoring and supplemental instruction at tertiary institutions in the US and the UK as well as the institutional factors influencing the implementation and facilitation of such programs. She has written, presented, and published papers on face-to-face and online instruction, learning support, and training and professional development of instructors and tutors.
Christa received her Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Studies from Oxford University, England in 2003. She received her Masters of Science in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Development, also from Oxford University, in 1995. Christa's research was funded in part by the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals of the Universities of the United Kingdom.
